City Offices Open Juneteen

Monday, June 19, is Juneteenth. While it is a federal holiday, the Freeman City Council determined earlier this year that employees of the City of Freeman will be at work. That means City Hall will be open regular hours of 8 AM to noon & 1 -5 PM; city maintenance teams will be at work, as well.

June 19, 1865, is also known as Freedom Day as it marks the date that enslaved persons were finally given their freedom. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation - signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 - officially freed slaves, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that an executive decree finally reached the State of Texas. Freedom was delayed by more than two years for many.
