Lead Pipe Survey

“Water is essential. We rely on it from the moment we wake up in the morning and make a cup of coffee until we brush our teeth at night. While most water infrastructure is hidden from sight, it is foundational to our daily lives. Our water infrastructure is aging and in need of repair to withstand the challenges of the 21st century. We must maintain and modernize our Nation’s water infrastructure to deliver clean drinking water and safely transport and treat wastewater.” - Environmental Protection Agency, April 2023

The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) requires studies to determine infrastructure needs and funding to ensure that residents of the United States have access to safe drinking water. The State of South Dakota is currently conducting a survey that requires participation from those living in communities throughout the state. Freeman residents were notified of this in a letter mailed at the end of July and are reminded to complete the survey using the web address included in the letter and linked here.

Residents without access to the internet are encouraged to request assistance from a family member or friend. Paper copies of the survey are also available; arrangements can be made with City Hall to report results using that format, instead, if preferred.

Those unable to physically navigate their property for the purpose of collecting data are asked to notify City Hall so arrangements can be made to have this done. Call 605.925.7127; your name, address and phone number will be used for the purpose of contacting you prior to someone coming to your home to photograph pipes and complete the survey on your behalf.

All results must be reported, regardless of findings as a mandate of the SDWA. More information regarding this project can be found in this EPA fact sheet..
