In the Event of a Snow Emergency

While no major snow event is in the immediate forecast, the fact that it’s December means it’s a good time to review the protocols in place for potential snow emergencies. The City of Freeman will declare a snow emergency in response to 2 or more inches of snow. To avoid ticketing &/or towing, vehicles must be moved from ALL streets - from curb to curb (or from sidewalk to sidewalk where there is no curbing) - until the street has been cleared.

When a snow emergency is declared by the City of Freeman, the information is shared in a timely manner via the following avenues: 1) Citywide call & text notification service 2) The Courier online at FreemanSD.com 3) Facebook at .facebook.com/CityofFreemanSD/ 4) KELO Closeline online & scrolling on TV 5) Dakota News Now online & scrolling on TV and 6) “Breaking News” section on the homepage at CityofFreeman.org.

In Freeman’s business district, snow must be removed from sidewalks by 6:30 AM. This allows for snow to be placed on the street in advance of city crews clearing business district streets. The business district includes Main Street from Fifth to Railway, as well as one block to the east & one block to the west of that stretch of Main Street. Additionally, the business district streets also include Poplar Street, from the Post Office at Fifth & Poplar to City Hall at Third & Poplar.

Property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks of snow & ice, but are reminded to not blow or shovel snow back into the street.

Know that the City of Freeman does NOT typically post snow emergency notices on our local cable channel, Golden West Channel 90 as the site is not able to be administered or accessed remotely by city staff. Also note that the City of Freeman is NOT the entity responsible for relaying weather notifications.
